MD approves of previously banned pesticide

Apr 9, 2008 | Associated Press | The Cold Lake Sun News

The MD of Bonnyville seems to be having some issues with ground squirrels recently. In some areas there can be as much as two holes per square metre.
So when you have a gopher problem who can you call on? You call on strychnine -- a very potent pesticide usually used to kill rodents.
According to the Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Canada, strychnine was banned in 1992 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada after consultation with the provinces. They were concerned about possible adverse effects to human health and the environment from its use. The ban was temporarily lifted as the amount of ground squirrels began reaching record numbers.
Trials are being held and tests will be carried out this spring with a final decision on the use of strychnine following.

Ground squirrels are a problem because their holes damage machinery and eat the forage.
The strychnine will be mixed in with grain and placed deep into the ground squirrels' burrow. This method poses smaller risks at poisoning non-target species.
The Center for Disease and Control and Prevention states that strychnine is "A strong poison, only a small amount is needed to produce sever effects in people, it can be administered by mouth or inhaled. It is also possible to absorb strychnine through the membrane of your nose eyes and mouth."
Symptoms occur around 15-60 minutes from exposure and they include, agitation, restlessness, painful muscle spasms, repertory failure and possible brain death.
When asked about the environmental and safety concerns, the MD of Bonnyville's George Vachon replied "Gophers will be disposed of in burrows and in the cases where they are found above ground they are to be put in their burrows. There are certain safety precautions that need to be taken when handling strychnine such as safety goggles, rubber gloves and have the least amount of skin showing."
