Concerns about mold in households
Dec 20, 2007 | Christina Salvo | Fox 21 News
Kevin and Stacy Niles moved into a brand new John Laing home in September of last year and say it was only a few months before they began having problems with the indoor humidity. It is an issue both the Niles and John Laing agree is a problem, but the question and disagreement lies in why it is a problem and whose responsibility it is to fix it.
When the Niles bought their house they wanted it to be the one to raise their kids and watch them grow in, but instead it is been something else they have watched grow.
Stacy said, "There are about 36 windows in the house and in every single window you can notice some degree of mold." Something they claim is making their family sick. Stacy said "We've had upper respiratory infections left and right, ear infections, our 6 year-old just got diagnosed with asthma. Our doctor believes all our illnesses are related to mold exposure."
Mold she and her husband believe is a result of a defective humidifier. Stacy showed Fox21 the "house to home walk through and inspection" report they did before they closed on their brand new house. Listed in one of the three pages of items that needed repair was the humidifier.
Kevin Niles said, In December we started noticing a high humidity in the house and the actual door knobs and windows were being frozen from inside the house.
The Niles said the mold began growing in February. In March John Laing did a visual inspection of their humidifier but apparently found no problem. On April 13 the humidifier was turned off, but humidity readings taken after that date still exceeded the recommended percentage and mold is still visible.
In mid November John Laing hired a forensic engineer to come inspect the house again but would not comment about the reports until they review it with the Niles family first. Rich Larson, VP of Operations for John Laing Homes said "John Laing Homes will take all necessary actions in the report that refer to John Laing homes."
