Medtronic approved to sell heart lead in Japan
Dec 18, 2007 | Associated Press | Guardian Unlimited
Medtronic Inc on Monday said it received approval from regulators in Japan to sell its Sprint Quattro lead used with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) that detect and treat rapid heart rhythms. The medical device maker said it hopes to receive reimbursement approval for the product by Jan. 1, which would allow for its immediate commercial launch in Japan, a key market. The product has been in use in Europe and the United States since 2001. Medtronic in October suspended all sales of the Sprint Fidelis line of leads, or wires that link the heart to an ICD, upon finding the equipment may have contributed to five patient deaths.
