What Is Fleet Phospho Soda?

Fleet Phospho Soda is an over-the-counter oral sodium phosphate (OSP) laxative, which is indicated for use in bowel cleansing; however, it has been shown to cause kidney disease, specifically acute phosophate nephropathy (APN).  The product has often been utilized as a bowel cleanser, in preparation for colonoscopy, or surgery.  Fleet Phospho Soda contains sodium phosphate, which, when taken as indicated in some other products, functions as a laxative.  However, high-doses of the oral sodium phosphate, found in Fleet Phospho Soda, causes severe kidney damage, and possibly even death from renal (kidney) failure.

The Food and Drug Administration Warning Against Fleet Phospho Soda

The United States Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) released a consumer alert regarding phosphate-based bowel cleansers because they could cause renal failure.  Furthermore, the F.D.A., went on to state that "even in those individuals who had no pre-existing medical condition that would place them at a higher risk for phosphate-caused renal disease," the use of phosphate-based bowel cleansers should be seriously cautioned.

Finally, on December, 15, 2008, via a withdrawal notice, Fleet, the makers of the phosphate-based bowel cleanser, Fleet Phospho Soda, recalled all of its laxative products from the store shelves.  Nevertheless, Fleet left many of those who had taken its OSP without any recourse for their injuries.

Moreover, prompted by contraindications associated with OSPs, the F.D.A., has required a "Black Box" warning on OSP products.  Althought low levels of OSPs are considered indicated for bowl cleansing, physicians have been strongly cautioned to avoid usage of OSPs.

What Is The Mechanism Of Injury From Fleet Phospho Soda?

OSPs function as bowel cleansing laxatives by siphoning fluids from the body into the colon; and, as a result, can cause severe dehydration.  OSPs also cause elevated levels of sodium phosphate and other phosphate salts to develop in the renal (kidney) system.  When the elevated levels of phosphate salts begin to form renal deposits, they crystalize, and those crystals cause severe kidney damage.  In other words, phosphate crystals within the renal tubules form, and those crystals damage the nephron.  The nephron regulates the concentration of water and soluble substances like sodium salts by filtering the blood, reabsorbing what is needed and excreting the rest as urine.  It is that damage to the nephron which can cause acute renal failure following a disease known as acute phosphate nephropathy (APN).

What Are The Side Effects Of Fleet Phospho Soda?

The symptoms of Fleet Phospho Soda side effects, and APN include:

  • decreased urine production;
  • swelling of legs;
  • swelling of feet;
  • swelling of ankles; and,
  • dehydration.

These symptoms are often not noticeable in the early stages of APN.  To be sure, those who have taken OSPs should confirm there has been no renal damage through a blood test which evaluates serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in order to rule-out APN.
