Tobacco Industry under Fire for Reprehensible Conduct

Smoking related diseases cause approximately 400,000 American deaths each year. For decades, the tobacco industry denied that their cigarettes were addictive and caused lung cancer. However, internal documents reveal and confirm that they have known the adverse effects of cigarettes for decades. Cigarettes are known to cause multiple types of cancer and are, in fact, addictive. The tobacco industry, as a result, manipulated their products in design for the purposes of optimizing the nicotine addiction in smokers, thus taking advantage of millions of people. Stuart L. Finz, senior trial lawyer and CEO of the Finz firm tobacco attorney litigation department, obtained the first jury verdict in New York State history on behalf of a smoker against the largest tobacco company in the world, Phillip Morris USA Inc. The landmark verdict held Phillip Morris and American Tobacco accountable for designing cigarettes to addict smokers.

As reported in the media, Finz argued at trial that “Phillip Morris did studies to determine the most effective dose of nicotine to hook smokers, and then deliberately manipulated nicotine levels for the specific purpose of selling more cigarettes.” Finz said that this “demonstrated the reprehensibility of the company’s conduct.” The record $20,520.000.00 jury verdict was published by Verdict Search as one of the top verdicts in the nation for 2005.

About the Tobacco Industry

The tobacco industry was created in the mid1800's with the development of a process known as fluecuring that allowed tobacco smoke to be inhaled deep into the lungs. This fluecured tobacco was rolled into cigarettes by an automatic rolling machine that could roll hundreds of thousands of cigarettes each day.

The mass marketing of cigarettes helped popularize cigarette smoking. Unfortunately, with the rise in use of cigarettes came the rise of a lung cancer epidemic. Historical documents establish that the tobacco companies knew about the dangers of tobacco use since the early 1900's. Beginning in the 1920's, leading researchers around the world began publishing studies linking smoking to lung cancer and other tobacco related diseases. The results of these studies were so conclusive that by the early 1950's tobacco company scientists in internal tobacco company documents conceded the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. Have you been diagnosed with lung cancer because of cigarette smoking? Contact a New York Tobacco Attorney today for information of recovering compensation for your injuries.

Rather than warning consumers of the dangers of cigarettes, the tobacco companies began a campaign of misinformation to deceive consumers about the known risks of smoking. In 1953, leaders from seven major tobacco companies met at the Plaza Hotel in New York City to devise a plan to respond to the mounting evidence of the hazards of tobacco. This plan was intended to create doubt regarding the risks of cigarette smoking and included the printing of deceptive statements in newspapers, issuing deceptive press releases, performing decoy research, and providing false reassurances to smokers.

The tobacco industry in the United States has suffered greatly since the mid 1990's when it was successfully sued by several U.S. states for deliberately hiding the adverse effects of tobacco and contributing to the illness and deaths of many U.S. citizens. The industry was found to have decades of internal memos confirming in detail that tobacco (which contains nicotine) is both addictive and carcinogenic (cancercausing). Despite knowing that tobacco causes lung cancer, tobacco companies continued to yield a profit by manipulating nicotine levels in cigarettes for the specific purpose of addicting smokers to sell more cigarettes.
