Air bag disabled before fatal crash with preacher

Jul 14, 2008 | Associated Press | Fresno Bee News

The daughter-in-law of a Hickman preacher charged with murder says she disabled an air bag before a wreck that left an 85-year-old elderly rancher crippled.

Prosecutors allege 57-year-old Howard Douglas Porter staged two wrecks trying to kill Frank Craig. They say Porter wanted to cover up his misuse of part of the rancher's millions, which were earmarked for an agriculture museum.

Craig never walked again after a 2002 crash. Two years later, he drowned when Porter ran them off the road and into a canal.

Holly Porter testified Monday that she turned off the passenger-side air bag so that her 4-year-old daughter could ride with her grandfather in the front seat on a fishing trip.

Porter's defense continues Wednesday in Stanislaus County Superior Court.
