New Service to Take On Elder Abuse
May 12, 2008 | Associated Press | Channel 10 News
A local health group is opening the first-ever "haven" in the Capital Region to stop elderly abuse.
The Eddy Elder Care Group in Troy is opening the "Eddy Haven for Abused Elderly People" today. It's only the third program of its kind in the country.
The haven will offer a variety of programs, including legal services, medical care, temporary housing, and access to law enforcement.
The Eddy says nearly one million elderly are abused by caregivers every year across the country.
Dan Reingold, of the Hebrew Home for the Aged, said of elder abuse, "This is an epidemic in the United States. The numbers are growing, the population is growing, and there are no dedicated resources to this problem. We are today with elder abuse where we were 25 years ago with child abuse and domestic violence.
