Elder Abuse Legislation
Aug 9, 2007 | Staff | WJFW News
During a stop in Rhinelander Monday, the Wisconsin senator spoke about a bi-partisan bill he's heading up to create a national registry of people who have been convicted of health care abuse.
The registry would allow employers at health care facilities to access it prior to making a hire. Senator Kohl says, "In those cases those employees very often have prior history of abuse but there's no record of it to ascertain on a countrywide basis. The records are kept statewide, so what we need is a national registry of abusive healthcare workers."
The bill would also provide states with the necessary funding to establish background check systems that can keep predators with criminal histories out of long-term care settings. Senator Kohl thinks the registry and funding can be up and running by the end of the year.
