Cardiac Risk in the Young

Nov 3, 2009 | Staff | University of Ulster

The cause of Sudden Cardiac Death in the young will be explored at the University of Ulster's Science in Society lecture, sponsored by Bank of Ireland.

Cathal Breen, a clinical physiologist from the School of Health Sciences, will present the seminar entitled ‘Cardiac Risk in the Young', which takes place at the Coleraine campus this evening.

"Death from cardiac cause within one hour of symptoms is called Sudden Cardiac Death.  When this occurs in a young person, it is devastating for the family, friends and community of the individual," explains Mr Breen.

"Recent media interest in such cases has raised awareness about the commonality of this phenomenon in our population and this has led to eager participation in clinical screening for cardiac risk in the young. In this seminar I will explore some of the underlying causes of sudden cardiac death and discuss how screening can help detect these causes."

Screening is currently offered at the University of Ulster Clinic by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) NI. University of Ulster clinical physiology students are closely involved with the screening process.

Cardiac Risk in the Young takes place in Lecture Theatre 8, University of Ulster, Coleraine campus, on Monday 26th November at 6pm. Admission is free.

The Science in Society initiative, which is now in its third year, is organised by the School of Biomedical Sciences, and was set up to promote discussion and understanding of science and its relevance to society.
