Bayer to stop sale of Trasylol
Nov 12, 2007 | Staff | Pittsburgh Business Times
Bayer AG said it would stop selling its bleeding treatment Trasylol after a study linked the product to a 50 percent higher risk of death than competing drugs in patients undergoing heart surgery.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked the German drug giant to stop selling Trasylol, used to prevent excessive bleeding during heart-bypass surgery, until the agency could receive and review further results from the study.
Bayer has its U.S. headquarters in Robinson, near Pittsburgh, and employs about 1,500 in the region.
Meanwhile, the company said Tuesday that net income tripled to $1.71 billion, driven by a one-time tax benefit from the remeasurement of deferred tax liabilities, mostly due to the acquisition of Schering.
