Trasylol Lawyer
Trasylol is the brand name for aprotinin, a protein produced from the lung tissues of cows, and is commonly prescribed to patients du ring heart surgery to control blood loss. Though Aprotinin has been on the market for 13 years, it was first marketed as Trasylol in 1999.
Trasylol injections can stop or slow certain enzymes that normally promote bleeding and is helpful for surgical patients because the drug decreases bleeding and the need for blood transfusions during surgery. However, there has been evidence that shows Trasylol causes adverse, and sometimes fatal side effects.
Dangerous Trasylol side effects among patients who take the medication include a significantly increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and heart failure. If you or a loved one has suffered from these side effects from taking the drug Trasylol, a Trasylol lawyer at Finz & Finz, P.C. can assist you in recovering compensation for injuries incurred. The FDA Considers Safety of Trasylol
In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made it known that Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the heart surgery drug Trasylol, initially failed to make available a study showing that there was an increased risk of heart problems, strokes, kidney failures and death due to Trasylol intake. The findings of the study were finally released in September 2006, six days after an FDA panel had met to discuss Trasylol’s side effects and eight months after the agency began a safety review of the medication.
What do Trasylol research studies show?
In a Bayer study conducted by an independent research organization, 67,000 patient records were reviewed. All patients included in this study had undergone heart surgery; 30,000 patients were treated with Trasylol and the remaining 37,000 were treated with alternate medications. According to the FDA, the resulting analysis suggested that patients who received Trasylol showed an increased risk for death, kidney failure, congestive heart failure and stroke.
Prior reports also demonstrated the link between Trasylol and kidney failure. In one study, heart bypass surgery patients who were given Trasylol had double the risk of kidney failure requiring dialysis compared to patients who did not take medicines to reduce blood loss. In addition, their risk of heart attacks or heart failure increased by 55 percent.
As a result of such studies, the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory that summarizes the findings in such studies. The FDA has announced that it will continue to evaluate Trasylol. In the meantime, the FDA has recommended that doctors limit its prescription of the drug in the prevention of blood loss cases unless absolutely deemed necessary.
