What is Gadolinium?

Gadolinium is injected into the body as an organic solution of gadolinium complexes and gadolinium compounds to enhance images in medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).   The most commonly employed form is manufacturered as Magnevist.  In patients suffering from renal failure or other inflammatory conditions, its use can cause nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy.  Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy is a rare and serious syndrome that involves fibrosis (formation of fibrous connective tissue as a reparative process) of skin, joints, eyes, and internal organs.

Have you or a loved one suffered from nephrogenic systemic fibrosis due to Gadolinium? A Gadolinium Attorney can help assist you in filing for compensation. Contact a Gadolinium Attorney today!

Gadolinium Has Been Linked to Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF)

In 2006, the link between NSF and Gadolinium-containing contrast agents was made in multiple medical periodicals, journals and reports.

As a result, Gadolinium-containing contrast is now considered contraindicated in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (a measure of renal function) under 60 and especially under 30 due to the risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

In nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), large areas of dense skin with fibrotic nodules develope. This results in range of motion being limited.  NSF shows a proliferation of skin cells and dendritic cells, thickened collagen bundles, increased elastic fibers, and mucin deposits.

While the skin may be affected, Gadolinium may cause injury to any organ and in so doing resembles diffuse scleroderma or systemic sclerosis (hardening of the organs).

Symptoms of Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis

Symptoms of Gadolinium induced nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) include:

  • Burning, itching, swelling of the skin;
  • Thick or hard skin which appears lusterous;
  • Dark or red patches of skin;
  • Yellow spots on the whites of the eyes;
  • Stiff joints, causing difficulty straightening or moving the limbs;
  • Deep pain in the ribs or hips;
  • Generalized muscle weakness; and,
  • hardening of internal organs.

Internal organs commonly affected include:  diaphram, heart, lungs and kidneys.  In rare cases death has occurred as a result of complications associated with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF).
