Serious Side Effects of Fosamax

Some of the known side effects of Fosamax are gastric and esophageal inflammation. Kidney failure, ocular damage, skin reactions, and hypoglycemia have also been reported. The drug's medical insert also warns against lying down after taking Fosamax for fear it may burn a hole in the esophagus or stomach.

Many New York doctors highly advise against the use of Fosamax if a patient has any of the following:

  • low blood calcium (hypocalcemia)
  • a vitamin D deficiency
  • kidney disease
  • an ulcer in your stomach or esophagus

Additional adverse side effects of Fosamax have included:
  • chest pain
  • difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • pain or burning under the ribs or in the back
  • new or worsening heartburn
  • severe joint, bone, or muscle pain
  • jaw pain, numbness, or swelling
  • mild heartburn or stomach upset
  • diarrhea, gas, or constipation
  • headache

Fosamax and Osteonecrosis

Since 2001, there have been over 2,400 reports of bone death and jaw bone decay or osteonecrosis of the jaw by patients who have been taking Fosamax. On September 24, 2004 the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons issued a report prompting the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Merck, the manufacturers of Fosamax, to issue a warning to health care professionals concerning the drug and its connection to osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

The typical signs and symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw may include pain, swelling or infection of the gums, loosening of the teeth, poor healing of the gums, numbness or a feeling of heaviness in the jaw, drainage and exposed bone. Patients with serious cases of this condition may require the removal of sections of the jaw.

While Merck has stated the underlying cause of osteonecrosis of the jaw is uncertain and the possibility that it could be triggered by a traumatic event like tooth extraction or oral surgery. Many claim that the tooth extraction and oral surgery wouldn't be a problem if their jaws hadn't been damaged by the defective drug.
