Legislators are right in curtailing vaccine
May 25, 2007 | Staff | The Arizona Public
State lawmakers are to be commended for stopping parents of teenage girls and bureaucrats who want to override parental rights and force children to take an unproven vaccine intended to protect them from human papillomavirus.
Unlike tuberculosis or measles, HPV is not a public health threat, and the vaccine has not been in use long enough for long-term effects to be known.
Remember the severely deformed babies of women who took Thalidomide? And it took a generation before it became known that diethylstilbestrol causes cancer in the daughters, sons and grandchildren of women who take it.
Only parents should have the right to make health care decisions for their daughters, and the best defense against cervical cancer is a routine of annual checkups.
