Madison County Accutane trial continued to Oct. 19

Aug 20, 2009 | Amelia Flood | St. Clair Record

A medical malpractice trial against Edwardsville dermatologist Dr. Daniel Goran and the manufacturer of acne medication Accutane has been continued until Oct. 19.

Godfrey native Jason Peipert sued Goran, Hoffman LaRoche Inc., and Roche Laboratories in 2003, claiming he developed Crohn's Disease, an inflammatory bowel disorder, after using the drug Goran prescribed 10 years ago.

In June, Roche pulled Accutane from the U.S. market after juries awarded at least $33 million in damages to patients claiming bowel disease.

According to a Bloomberg report, the company faces as many as 5,000 personal injury claims over Accutane.

Peipert claims that Goran was negligent in prescribing the drug because it is difficult to manage in patients and that the doctor failed to test him for potential reactions and side effects.

He claims he was given the drug more frequently than is allowed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and that he was never advised of the risks and side effects of the drugs.

Peipert is suing Roche for failing to give instructions about how long a person should take the drug and because he believes the drug is unreasonably dangerous.

Peipert is represented by John Papa of Granite City.

Goran is represented by Jeffrey Glass of Belleville.

Roche and fellow defendant Hoffman LaRoche Inc. are represented by John Galvin of St. Louis.

Madison County Circuit Judge Dave Hylla presides.
