What is the Spinal Cord?

The spinal cord is the thin, tubular structure that extends down the back, from the base of the brain to the waist. It is an extension of the central nervous system from the brain and is enclosed in and protected by the bony vertebral column. The spinal cord's main function is to transmit neural messages between the brain and the rest of the body.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can vary in severity and the spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for major damage to occur. Thus, a spinal cord injury is often defined as an injury that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling due to damage of the spinal cord. Two types of spinal cord injuries exist:

  1. Complete, where there is a loss of function, sensation, or voluntary movement below the level of injury. The injury affects both sides of the body equally.
  2. Incomplete, where there is still some function below the level of injury and the injury has affected both sides of the body differently. Persons with incomplete spinal injuries may be able to move one limb more than the other or may be able to feel parts of the body or have more function one side of the body than the other.

Spinal injuries are also classified by the location of the injury. Tetraplegia, also known as quadriplegia, is defined as an injury to the spinal cord in the cervical spine (neck) where there is a resulting loss of muscle function in all other areas of the body. Parapleglia is known as an injury in the spinal cord that affects the thoracic (mid-back), lumbar (lower back), or pelvic areas of the body.

It is important to not confuse spinal cord injuries with other types of back injuries such as ruptured disks and pinched nerves. If the back is affected, but the bones around the spinal cord are damaged and the spinal cord remains intact, the injury is not considered a spinal cord injury.

The Effects of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can cause more harm than loss of sensation or motor functioning in victims. People with spinal cord injuries can also experience other medical issues such as dysfunction of the bowel and bladder, problems with fertility, and the ability to breathe. Since spinal cord injuries affect the central nervous system, the inability to regulate blood pressure, body temperature and other involuntary functions may also occur. Also, since spinal cord injuries can be extremely traumatic to a victim and their lifestyle, psychological effects may also occur such as depression.
