New York Pulmonary Embolism Lawyer
A Pulmonary Embolism is a blood clot in the lung. The clot travels to the vessels of the lung and continues through the smaller vessels. Eventually, it becomes wedged in a vessel it can no longer pass through and this causes blood to stop flowing to that section of the lung. As blood is deprived of that section that portion suffers and infarct. An infarct is when a part of the lung that is no longer getting blood or oxygen dies.
Causes
There are a few factors that can result in an Pulmonary Embolism:
- Immobilization of the legs from being confined to a bed can cause a clot to form in the the legs and travel to the lung
- Traveling in a car or airplane for long hours and sitting for a long time without streching your legs allows blood to 'sit' in the legs and increases the risk of a embolism
- Surgery
- Trauma or injury to the legs
- Obesity
- Heart Disease
- Burns
- Previous history of blood clots
- Pregnanacy
- Cancer
Symptoms
- Chest pain that is sharp and stabbing, comes suddenly, worse when taking a deep breath
- Shortness of breath
- Anxiety
- A cough that is dry or mixed with blood
- Sweating
- Passing out
