What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer commonly caused by asbestos exposure. With this type of cancer due to contact with asbestos, cells of the mesothelium, a membrane that covers, protects, and produces a lubricating fluid that enables internal organs to move, become abnormal and divide without control or order. As a result, these abnormal cells invade and damage nearby tissues and organs.

Several types of Mesothelioma exist, depending on its location in the body. Some of these sites include:

  • peritonium - cancer of the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity
  • pleura - cancer of the mesothelial membrane that surrounds the lungs and chest wall cavity
  • pericardium - cancer of the lining that covers and protects the heart

Although rare, Mesothelioma is a serious disease that may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, often due to asbestos exposure. Unfortunately, the disease is often advanced before symptoms appear and the average survival time is about 1 to 2 years. Contact an Asbestos Attorney Litigation New York now, if you believe New York asbestos exposure has lead to you or a loved ones ailment.

Have you, a friend or a loved one been put at risk in New York?

One of the leading causes of Mesothelioma is asbestos exposure, a contributing factor which accounts for almost 70 to 80 percent of all reported cases. Asbestos was the mineral fiber used in insulation and other commercial products during the 1940s especially in New York. When inhaled, the microscopic fibers can damage cells and cause serious health problems. In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis (a noncancerous, chronic lung ailment), and other cancers, such as those of the larynx and kidney. Since 1989, most use of the material has stopped. However, those who have been exposed continue to be at risk since symptoms can take 20 to 50 years to develop. Contact an Asbestos Attorney Litigation New York today for more information.

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is the generic name for the fiber made from natural minerals that was commonly used to produce insulation and fireproofing materials, automotive brakes, textile products, and other commercial materials between the 1940s and late 1980s. However, exposure to asbestos can cause deadly cancers including mesothelioma, a lung cancer linked to asbestos inhalation.

It is estimated that 27.5 million Americans were exposed to asbestos between 1940 and 1979. Today, many asbestos-containing products remain in buildings, ships, industrial facilities and other environments where the fibers can become airborne. It is thought that around 21 million people have been exposed to asbestos since the 1940s, and many more cases are expected to be reported in the next 25 years since symptoms are generally slow to develop.
