Fusarium Keratitis Symptoms Linked to Bausch and Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc

Have you or a loved one suffered from Fusarium Keratitis symptoms? Our New York Attorneys can help you recover compensation for your injury. Contact New York Injury Attorneys today! On May 15, 2006, Bausch & Lomb recalled its product, ReNu with MoistureLoc, a contact solution used by more than 2.3 million soft contact lens users in the United States. Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc MultiPurpose Solution is a soft lens contact solution meant for the daily cleaning, removal of protein deposits, rinsing, disinfection and storage. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the solution has been linked to causing Fusarium Keratitis, a serious eye infection that affects the cornea and can potentially cause permanent blindness.

What is Keratitis?

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea, the transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber and provides most of an eye's optical power. Keratitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating reports of keratitis linked to a fungi known as Fusarium.

What is Fusarium Keratitis?

Fusarium is a fungus commonly found in organic matter such as soil and plants. The fungus can cause serious infection known as Fusarium Keratitis and can even lead to loss of vision. Fusarium Keratitis, a fungal keratitis, causes corneal ulcers with lesions in the surrounding cornea. The Fusarium Keratitis symptoms include symptoms of blurred vision, a red and painful eye that does not improve when contact lenses are removed, increased sensitivity to light, and excessive tearing or discharge.

What do I do if I have Fusarium Keratitis Symptoms?

It is important to see a doctor if you experience any symptoms associated with Fusarium Keratitis. Though a rare disease, Fusarium Keratitis can have a long-lasting, severe effect to your cornea and vision. An ophthalmologist can help diagnose the disease by reviewing your history, symptoms and signs. A diagnosis is made by completing a culture report with a corneal scraping, typically taking a week for patients to receive conclusive results. After receiving the assistance of a medical professional, contact the New York Injury Attorneys to learn more about your rights to compensation in New York.

How does Fusarium Keratitis affect the eye?

Fusarium Keratitis is often the result of a trauma to the eye and exposure to fungi. Such an event allows the fungus directly into the cornea and the fungus can then grow slowly in the cornea, eventually spreading to the anterior and posterior layers of the eye. Without proper treatment, the fungus can break through the protective membrane covering the eye and pass into the eye’s anterior chamber.

The patient may show fusarium keratitis symptoms within a few days or weeks later with fungal keratitis.
