Covering other conditions, but not autism, is unfair
Jun 21, 2010 | Staff | Detroit News
I was appalled to read the Dec. 13 editorial ("Head off latest health insurance mandate") encouraging lawmakers to reject mandatory insurance coverage for children with autism. I simply cannot understand why anyone with a reasonable amount of intellect and humanity would hold this stance.
Insurance coverage was created to spread risk to a collective group. Why should I pay for your $50,000 cancer treatment that they expect will give you six more months of life and you shouldn't pay for a therapy or treatment that will keep me from having to live on disability for the rest of my life?
Why is it OK to cover treatment for some and not others? Why cover anything? Why not just eliminate insurance and make health care a cash business? Why not say, "If you can't pay for your own treatment then you don't get it"? Because that is not the intention of Americans.
This state is so grossly behind on almost every front on autism. This might not mean anything until your daughter can't work because she can't find anyone to care for her daughter or your grandson never learns to bathe well because his parents never could afford the necessary specialized therapy that would have made a huge difference.
