A Lincoln County middle school student athlete died overnight after he was rushed to the hospital during a football game on Wednesday.

Will McCleod suffered severe head trauma during the game between West Lincoln and North Lincoln middle schools, according to Lincoln County communications.

The game was being played at West Lincoln High School. McCleod was a fullback on the offensive line for North Lincoln Middle.

According to Aaron Allen, principal at West Lincoln High School, McCleod was apparently injured on a play with one minute left in the game.

Allen did not know exactly how McCleod was injured.

EMTs were on site for the game as standard procedure and took McCleod to the hospital when he was injured.

The game continued after McCleod was taken to the hospital.

Counselors and clergy from local churches are were on hand to speak with students on Thursday.
