Brookfield, Madison County (WSYR-TV) - Madison County Sheriff's Deputies say a man who splits his time between New York and Florida was killed Sunday night, when his car collided with a tractor-trailer.
James Cirillo, 76, of West Edmeston and Sarasota, Florida, was heading west on Welch Road in the Town of Brookfield, around 7pm Sunday night. When he approached Route 8, his car turned into the path of a tractor-trailer heading north.
The driver of the truck collided with Cirillo's drivers' side door. The truck driver then crossed into the opposite side of traffic. Sheriff's Deputies say guard rails helped prevent the two vehicles from falling down a cliff.
Cirillo was cut from his vehicle but died at the scene. The truck driver was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for back injuries.
Witnesses told deputies that Cirillo's car appeared to enter Route 8 in an effort to possibly make a u-turn and return to Welch Road. Witnesses say Cirrilo probably did not realize the presence of tractor trailer that was rounding a curve very near the intersection.
Deputies, along with the Sheriff's Office accident reconstruction team are continuing their investigation.
