Boston - A new study has shown that smoking can damage your skin in ways that the sun cannot even do.

Skin which is protected from the sun can be heavily damaged through smoking according to the University of Michigan. The report is published in the issue Archives of Dermatology. Researchers have stated that "cigarette smoking has long been investigated as a risk factor for premature skin aging."

82 people were looked at in the study with 38 men and 44 women. The study looked at premature skin aging and showed that smoking caused the wrinkling of the skin to occur far more prominently and at an earlier age than those who did not smoke.

The way in which smoking harms the skin is similar to the way in which the sun's UV rays harm the skin. The only difference though is that the smoking can harm the skin in places where you think your skin would always be protected.

If you smoke, it may harm your skin in places where the sun would never shine and cause wrinkles as well as skin issues very early on in their lives.
