Rain, not snow, arrives in NY metro area
Jan 14, 2008 | JOHN VALENTI | Newsday
The predicted snow was a big N-O. Though forecasters had predicted a late-night, early-morning storm would dump as much as 9 inches of snow on the metro area, it turned out most of the area got rain -- and only a light dusting of snow.
Nevertheless, the snowstorm that wasn't did not leave New York and Long Island totally unscathed on Monday.
The New York State Department of Transportation has reported a number of scattered weather-related accidents on the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway and Southern State Parkway -- most, it is believed, due to slick road conditions and ice.
The Long Island Rail Road has no reported delays after reminding riders Sunday night to allow extra travel time Monday morning in anticipation of the snowstorm that wasn't.
But the New York City Transit subway system is reporting that mechanical problems at the Times Square-42nd Street Station means there is no No. 7 train service Monday morning between Hunterspoint Avenue and Times Square. And switch problems at the 36th Street Station means that Jamaica-bound F trains are running on the V line between 47th-50th Street / Rockefeller Center and Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue.
There are no reported delays at LaGuardia, Kennedy, Newark-Liberty or Long Island-MacArthur, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The National Weather Service is still warning of a chance of snow showers before 9 a.m., but it is probably too warm for any accumulation. The NWS predicts a high temperature of about 40 degrees Monday.
The chance of precipitation is about 40 percent.
