Toronto tunnel crash stalls thousands of commuters
Apr 23, 2007 | Staff | National Post
A crash on the Toronto Transit Commission early Monday left one transit worker dead and two others in hospital - and created chaos for riders during the morning rush hour.
News reports say an 11-member maintenance crew had just finished its nightly asbestos removal when the accident happened around 5 a.m. ET in the southbound tunnel south of the Lawrence subway station on the Yonge line.
One TTC worker died when the train he was riding on crashed on the tracks. Two others were taken to Sunnybrook Hospital with critical injuries.
Something dislodged from the subway car or the tunnel wall, injuring the workers, Gary Webster, the TTC's interim chief general manager, told CBC News. The investigation continues and some stations may be closed for the day.
