Two drivers die in car crashes

Jan 23, 2008 | David Earley | Courier News

FATAL car accidents near Townsville and the Gold Coast have seen Queensland's road toll fatalities for 2008 rise to 19.

A man died when he lost control of his vehicle on the Bruce Highway near the Giru turnoff, about 50km southeast of Townsville, spinning off the road and crashing into a tree about 8pm yesterday.

About 5.30pm, a 43-year-old Beechmont man died when he lost control of his motorcycle on Beechmont Road, Lower Beechmont.

The rider was thrown from his motorcycle, over an oncoming vehicle and across the road. He was treated by ambulance officers and a helicopter was dispatched to transport him to hospital, but he was declared dead at the scene a short time later.

In another accident last night, the Bruce Highway at Rollingston, about 50km north of Townsville, was closed after a B-double truck jacknifed about 9.30.

The male driver received minor lacerations to the head.

The site was expected to take several hours to clear.
