Bloomberg unsatisfied with buildings agency after 13 deaths

Apr 22, 2008 | Associated Press | Channel 13 News

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he's not satisfied with the city's Department of Buildings. And he wants to know what went wrong in the wake of several deadly construction accidents that have claimed 13 lives this year.

The deadliest occurred last month when a crane fell from a building under construction, crushing an apartment building and killing seven people. A city inspector was arrested after he was accused of lying about inspecting the suspect crane. Last week, Building Commissioner Patricia Lancaster admitted to the City Council that her department had improperly approved a construction permit at the site of the accident.

Bloomberg told reporters yesterday he didn't think "anybody should be fully satisfied with the Department of Buildings," adding that he's looking into whether everything that could have been done was in fact done.
