Investigation Continues Into Crane Incident

Jun 16, 2008 | Staff | KXNT News

Safety inspectors are still trying to determine why a crane buckled on the CityCenter construction site. Witnesses say the 180-foot-tall crawler crane was being shut down Friday afternoon, when the crane began swaying and the horizontal boom tilted toward the ground. A spokeswoman for MGM Mirage, the developer of CityCenter, says the metal supports for the crane span "malfunctioned." No one was hurt, but the incident shut down traffic on a portion of the Las Vegas Strip for more than an hour. The crane mishap came at a time state and federal safety officials have been looking into a string of accidents at the nine billion dollar residential, entertainment and hotel complex. CityCenter workers went on a one-day strike earlier this month after a worker was crushed by a crane, the sixth fatal accident at the since since 2006. Union officials and general contractor Perini [[ pur-REE-nee ]] Construction came to an agreement to implement more worker safety measures. The company let an outside party do a work site safety assessment and say they will give workers more safety courses.
