Construction worker falls five stories to his death

Sep 12, 2008 | Associated Press | Record Online News

Authorities say a construction worker who plummeted about five stories to his death in Manhattan when his scaffold collapsed was wearing a harness but that it was not tethered to the building.

Thirty-eight-year-old Miguel Rodriguez became the latest person to die in a series of construction accidents throughout the city. The Ecuadorean immigrant leaves behind two sons and a wife.

Buildings inspectors issued a stop-work order at the site on West 111th Street after the accident Thursday afternoon.

A construction worker was critically injured when he fell three stories at a Brooklyn site in a separate incident Thursday.

More than 20 people have died in New York City construction accidents this year, including nine in two crane collapses.
