Returning traffic light sets things right

Jun 27, 2008 | Raffy Boudjikanian | The Chronicle

Traffic is no more congested than usual this morning on the corner of Sources and Pierrefonds Boulevards in Pierrefonds/Roxboro, returning back to normal after a confusing afternoon yesterday when a traffic light fell down due to a car accident. The light is back up today.

"There was a caravan trying to turn south on Sources Boulevard from Pierrefonds, and someone else going north on Sources," explained Bobby Fournier, manager of a garage on the corner of the intersection. "The caravan I guess tried to dodge the car at the last moment on the intersection and hit the light."

Fournier said nobody seemed to be seriously hurt, since the owner of the van was able to back up away from the fallen light.

When The Chronicle arrived yesterday, borough public works employees were busy moving the fallen light to the side of the street while an ambulance picked up the van's driver.

"I don't think he's seriously hurt," said one of the public works employees who did not want his name revealed. "The police tested him and he was drunk," he said.

Since the light on top of the post was not damaged, another public works employee said fixing it would only be a matter of setting the light back on top of another post.

"It will maybe cost around $5,000," the employee added, stating they were even hoping to put it back up by the end of the evening.

Fournier said the Pierrefonds/Sources intersection is a dangerous one, due in part to the sudden narrowing of Sources Boulevard north of Pierrefonds, which is not necessarily visible to people turning north off of Pierrefonds toward Sources. "I think there is an accident here every week," said Fournier.
