Man Killed In 3-Car Accident, I-40 Shut Down For Hours
Feb 27, 2008 | Staff | Channel 2 News
When the roads froze over, it hit Nashville hard and fast. In the span of one hour, just before Midnight Tuesday, there were more than 75 individual traffic accidents.
Interstate-40 was shut down for hours as police worked an accident that left one person dead.
Police say a pair of wrecks led to the man's death.
At 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, police say a minivan skidded off the road in the westbound lanes of I-40.
Moments later, a Ford explorer hit the minivan from behind.
Police say the driver of the second vehicle got out to investigate the crash.
Officers say a Dodge pickup lost control near the scene and slammed into the second vehicle, along with the driver who had gotten out.
"At this point, it appears that the minivan possibly was going too fast for the conditions, and that's what caused it to go into a spin and the driver to lose control of it, and the Ford explorer obviously wasn't expecting that," said Captain David Imhof of the Metro police department.
Doctors pronounced the driver of the second vehicle dead at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
The other two drivers involved had minor injuries.
The victim's name has not been released.
