Fatal Accidents Point Out Importance Of Seat Belts

Feb 20, 2008 | Associated Press | News 8

Fatal motor vehicle accidents in Shelburne, N.H., and Gorham have claimed the lives of four Mainers in recent days.

In the New Hampshire crash, three people ages 18, 17 and 15 were killed when police said their car was traveling too fast and flipped over a snowbank along Route 2 on Saturday night.

In Gorham on Monday, a 56-year-old man died when the dump truck he was driving collided with a container truck along Route 25.

In both accidents, none of the victims was wearing a seat belt.

Maine's seat belt law will get tougher beginning April 1, when police will be able to pull motorists over and write tickets for failure to buckle up. Currently, it is considered a secondary offense, and motorists only can be cited if they are pulled over for another offense.

Once the new law goes into effect, a first offense will cost a motorist $70.
