Two killed in Saturday traffic accidents

Oct 19, 2009 | Staff | WDAM.com

Two people died in two separate traffic accidents in the Pine Belt Saturday and the Mississippi Highway Patrol says both deaths could have been prevented if the drivers were wearing safety belts.

The Highway Patrol says 57-year-old Kathren H. Sandifer of Lumberton was killed when her 1996 Hyundai collided with a charter bus 4 miles north of Lumberton on Interstate 59 shortly after noon.  Officers say Sandifer's car overturned, ejecting her from the vehicle.  No one on the bus was injured.

And later in the day, another woman was killed when her SUV left Highway 49 and flipped over.  The Highway Patrol says Tamrra K. Vivias died shortly before 5 p.m. when she was ejected from her 2001 Mitsubishi as she was headed southbound, about 1 mile south of Paul B. Johnson State Park.

The Highway Patrol says neither driver was wearing a seat belt.

Sgt. James Snyder with the Highway Patrol tells us if both victims had worn safety belts, they might have survived the wrecks.
