Westport police have charged the driver of a tourist bus that crashed over a bank in the Buller District, killing one person and injuring others in February.

On February 2, the bus, carrying 17 overseas tourists, left the road and rolled down a bank on State Highway 6 at Charleston, 27km south-west of Westport.

The crash killed a 62-year-old United Kingdom national and injured a number of others from different countries.

Westport police Senior Sergeant Geoff Scott said after an extensive investigation, police had charged the 37-year-old Auckland based driver.

He would be appearing in the Westport District Court on September 18 on two charges, one of careless driving causing death and another of careless driving causing injury.
