3-year-old girl drowns in Westport boat accident

Police say a 3-year-old New York girl has died in a boating accident in Long Island Sound near Westport.

Police say Alexandra Vitale of Brooklyn drowned in a sailing accident off Cockenoe Island Tuesday. They say she was on board with a sailing instructor and two cousins, 3-year-old William Howell and 6-year-old Andrew Howell, also of Brooklyn.

The girl was staying at the family's summer home in Westport. Police say she was pronounced dead at Norwalk Hospital after efforts to revive her failed.

Westport and two other police departments had marine units respond after receiving a report that three people were floundering in the water off the island, and they found a capsized sailboat from the Longshore Sailing School.

Police say a gust of wind apparently tipped over the boat.
