General Electric Dishwasher May Produce a Fire Hazard

General Electric (GE) Recalled GE Profile™ and GE Monogram® Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

On October 26, 2010 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a product safety recall affecting some 174,000 GE Profile™ and GE Monogram® Dishwashers due to fire and burn hazards they pose..

The fire hazard in these dishwashers arises from water condensation that can drip onto the electronic control board and cause a short circuit. There were five reports of fires to GE. In four of those, there was minor damage to the kitchen countertops over the dishwashers and there was one instance where there was minor damage to cabinets next to the dishwasher and smoke damage to the home. There are no reported instances of injuries.

According to the CPSC news release, “Water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.

The GE Monogram dishwashers that are the subject of this recall were manufactured between January 2004 and December 2006. The GE Profile dishwashers involved were manufactured between July 2002 and December 2005. The dishwashers were manufactured in black, white, stainless steel, bisque and included custom panels.

The dishwashers were sold at retail stores nationwide, appliance dealers and authorized builder distributors for between $750 and $1,400.

Stop Using the Dishwashers by Disconnecting it from its Electrical Supply

General Electric (GE) is asking customers to stop using the dishwashers by disconnecting it from its electrical supply, by shutting down the fuse or circuit breaker and to inform all other users of the machine of the fire hazard. GE will repair the dishwasher without charge or provide customers with a rebate on a new dishwasher. The GE Recall Hotline can be reached at (877) 275-6840 from 8am-5pm, or see GE’s recall website, where you can see if your dishwasher was included in the recall.
