Deadliest School Shooting in U.S. History

Two students were killed at 7:15 a.m. in a dormitory building on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute campus. Two hours later, unaware that a killer was loose, 30 others were shot and killed, some execution style, and 20 more suffered injury in Norris Hall, one of the buildings on the sprawling campus where classes were in session.

School Administration Failed to Warn Students after Two Shootings

While Virginia Tech officials and campus police cannot secure a 2600 acre campus from the bullets of a handgun, students have a right to expect that those in charge of campus safety will exercise sound judgment in order to protect them from harm. Here, the Virginia Tech leaders failed to protect the victims of this tragic mass killing. Having received notice of the earlier murders (two hours before), the Virginia Polytechnic Institute administration knew that a killer was on the loose but failed to employ a plan to provide safe haven to the thousands of students and teachers who attended classes with no warning of the dangers they were about to encounter.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute Must be Held Accountable

Had the school administration and campus security acted prudently after the first killings, the campus would have been shut down and classes cancelled. This done, there would be 30 less dead victims, and thousands of family members, students, and faculty that would have been spared from this disaster that produced irreparable physical and emotional harm to so many innocent people. Other Fatal School Shootings

While history records the Whitman killings in Texas (16 dead, 31 wounded) and the Columbine shootings in Colorado (12 dead, 23 wounded), the Virginia Polytechnic Institute carnage ranks as the most horrific school shooting disaster in U.S. history. For this, those in charge must be held responsible for their gross negligence and tragically poor judgment.
