Bus Accidents in America

Buses are often a reliable form of transportation for those who are unable to drive or are without access to a motor vehicle. There are more than 30,000 commercial buses in operation across the United States. With public transportation so readily available throughout the country, more than 360 million bus passengers each year take advantage of the transportation systems provided to them.

Unfortunately, with the increasing numbers of drivers and passengers on the road, the risk of being involved in an accident has also increased. Studies of accident data have accounted for 141 motorcoach accidents that caused 21 deaths and 442 injuries between 1993 and 1997. Between 1987 and 1996, motor coaches that traveled across long distances (interstate travel) had an average fatality rate of 4.3 passenger deaths per year.

Bus Accident Data

From a period of 2003 to 2005, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that an average of 282 fatal crashes involved passenger buses. During that same time, more than 9,000 buses were involved in non-fatal crashes each year. If you have been injured or your loved one has been killed in a New York crash, contact our New York Bus Accident Lawyer today for more information on receiving rightful compensation for your loss. Finz & Finz, P.C. can help you recover compensation to ensure your families financial stability.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration defines a bus as any motor vehicle designed to transport more than eight people, including the driver. Crashes are considered fatal for any crash where one or more persons dies within 30 days of the crash. The fatality does not have to occur at the scene of the crash and it includes any person involved in the crash, including pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as occupants of the passenger cars, trucks, and buses. Crashes are considered to be non-fatal where one or more persons has non-fatal injuries requiring transportation by a vehicle for the purpose of obtaining immediate medical attention; or one or more of the vehicles were towed away from the scene due to "disabling damage". The towed vehicle need not be the truck or bus involved in the crash.

Child Safety and Bus Accidents

An average of 23.5 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily throughout the United States. Thus, school buses are a cause of special alarm when it comes to the safety of children. Because of the size of a school bus, a crash or collision involving this type of vehicle can cause serious injury like other bus accidents. Due to a lack of restraint systems and seatbelts, 12,000 of these children are injured each year in school bus accidents. Although the injuries are usually minor, some school bus accidents have caused fatal injuries, killing an average of 11 children per year.

Types of Bus-Related Injuries

Bus accidents and school bus accidents can often result in serious injury or death. Contributing factors as driver negligence, inadequate safety restraints, dangerous roadways, weather conditions, defective products and improper maintenance may be possible causes to severe accidents that lead to serious and even fatal injuries.

Bus accident injuries are similar to injuries sustained in many motor vehicle accidents. These injuries can include

  • brain injuries
  • brain damage
  • whiplash
  • spinal cord injuries
  • concussions
  • sprains
  • fractures
  • abrasions
  • internal and soft tissue injuries
  • burn injuries
