Drug-Coated Stent Inury Attorney New York

Recent findings raise concern for New York drug-coated stents

For people with heart conditions, drug-coated stents - tiny coils which are placed in your artery and slowly release medicine, were intended to make sure the artery did not shut down. Over six million people around the world have received stents as they now account for almost 90 percent of implants. However, a recent Swiss study reports that patients with the drug-coated stents implanted in their arteries were found to have a significantly higher risk of sudden death than those who received drug-free metal stents. The risk is associated with patients who have discontinued the drug Plavix, a blood thinner often prescribed to patients who undergo a heart procedure called an angioplasty. Drug-coated stents now under FDA scrutiny as a defective product

There has been growing concern about the long-term safety of drug-coated stents. In addition to the recently released Swiss study where it was found that patients were twice as likely to be at risk for serious blood clots if they discontinued their Plavix medication, two additional studies in the United States and Netherlands found that deaths and heart attacks were higher with coated stents after three years. According to new studies, it was found that defective drug-coated stents product may hinder the heart's natural ability to form tiny collateral blood vessels that can salvage heart muscle by rerouting the blood supply.

In October 2006, the American College of Cardiology's online medical journal reported that drug-coated stent use results in an estimated 2,160 excess deaths in the United States each year.

While some New York doctors have prescribed the long-term use of Plavix, it is still under further study whether or not there are negative long-term effects from using the drug for extended periods of time. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted a critical advisory panel meeting in December 2006 to consider the safety of defective drug-eluting stents.
