How does Lyrica Work?
The mechanism of the Lyrica's efficacy is, essentially, its affecting of a state of electrical stability in the brain. The feature of Lyrica is reflected in its indication for treatment of conditions such as epilepsy.
The human brain (specifically the cortex) is comprised of myriad nerve cells which operate to carry messages from the soma (home of the nucleus, and the origin of the message that the nerve cell is sending) of one cell, down its axon (an elongated pathway) to its axon terminal where the signals are transmitted across an open space (the synaptic cleft) to the dendrites (tendril like extensions from the back-end of a nerve cell's soma) of the receiving cell.
While the transmission of the message across the synaptic cleft is achieved through the use of neurotransmitters (molecules that either activate, or inhibit a function in the receiving cell), the message, when it is traveling along the axon of a cell, is achieved through electrical signals.
If the electrical singles are too frequent, or too constant, the delicate structure-dependent functioning of the brain is compromised, and normal tasks (such as sending messages) are affected, and even interrupted, which manifest as seizures, or fits.
What Lyrica does is prevent the too much electrical activity in the brain. It does this by mimicking a neurotransmitter, referred to as GABA, which is a natural calming agent upon nerves, thus, decreasing the excessive electrical activity.
What are the Side-Effects of Lyrica?
Despite the fact that Lyrica is utilized to address excessive electrical activity in the human brain, it carries with it some side-effects include the following:
