What is Celebrex?

Celebrex (celecoxib) is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory (also known as an "NSAID") sulfonamide medication, which is prescribed to aide in pain relief. The drug was manufactured and marketed by Pfizer, and was in use until its recall, which was announced on December 17, 2004. Thereafter, it was again placed on the market, and advertising resumed in 2006, and 2007, with specific mention during same as to its dangers. It was specifically designed to minimize the effects of such a drug on the gastrointestinal systems of patients.

The drug is indicated for treatment of patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain, ankylosing spondylitis and is also indicated for use in reduction of the number of polyps in patients suffering from adenomatous polyposis. Additionally, it is indicated for long-term use, unlike other pain-relief agents such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Despite its indicated uses, the drug has been fraught with negative reports that span the gambit from allegations of fabricated efficacy studies to reports of the side-effects of the drug including cardiopulmonary complications, specifically myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), trans-ischemic events (strokes), and thrombosis (blood clots).

How does Celebrex Work?

The mechanism of Celebrex's efficacy is akin to other NSAIDs, in that, it acts as a nonselective inhibitor of enzymes, specifically, cyclooxygenases, which catalyze to form prostaglandins, also known as "messenger molecules," which facilitate the autoimmune reaction which naturally manifests in the body as inflammation. So, by inhibiting the molecules that, as messengers tell the body to react with inflammation, Celebrex, when effective, short-circuits the inflammatory process in the human body.

What are the Side-Effects of Celebrex?

The side-effects of Celebrex include, but are not limited to:

  • fever;
  • rash;
  • hives;
  • blisters;
  • swelling (in the lower legs, ankles, hands, feet, throat, face, and, tongue);
  • difficulty in swallowing;
  • thrombosis (blood clots);
  • trans-ischemic events (strokes);
  • myocardial infarctions (heart attacks); and,
  • death.
